A smash beer is compiled of a single malt and a single hop. Homebrewers use this as a way to gain an understanding of the malts and hops, the beers might not be complex in grains, but the way you use the hops can create quite a lot of complexity in the hop aroma and flavour. Try this Amarillo smash by Lunar Brew.

HERE’S WHAT YOU WILL NEED
About the process:
This is a fairly simple brew, keep your mash at around 65C for 60 mins and then boil with hop additions. A large chunk of your hops go in at flameout to add aroma and flavour, but low bitterness.
Ingredients:
Water: Get the best water you can find, generally aiming for a PH of between 5.4 and 5.7. If you use municipal water, boiling for 20 mins will allow the chlorine to evaporate.
Malt Bill: Simple base for the hops to shine.
Malt / Adjunct | Weight | Type |
Pale Malt | 5 Kg (100%) | Base |
Hop Bill: This is a great hop for aroma and flavour.
Hop | Weight | Duration | Why? |
Amarillo | 14g (8.6%) | 60 mins | Bitter |
Amarillo | 14g (8.6%) | 30 mins | Flavour / Aroma |
Amarillo | 28g (8.6%) | 0 mins | Aroma / Flavour |
Yeast:
Fermentis S05 | Nice American neutral flavour to help the hops shine. |
Brewing Process:
Pitching the Yeast and fermentation: Ferment at 19C for 2 weeks to allow the yeast to clear the beer. Bottle and condition for another week after bottle conditioning. This beer can be enjoyed relatively fresh as soon as it is carbonated and will drink much like a Pale Ale.
Carbonation:
High level of carbonation: 2.2 to 2.7 volumes of CO2.
